Advanced Early Assessment and Intervention
with Babies and Young Children

This course is designed for Bobath trained therapists who would like to expand their knowledge of assessment and early intervention. This is a theoretical and practical course which will include topics such as: normal & atypical development of the term and pre-term infant, assessment tools, criteria for intervention based on the Bobath Concept.


Who is the course for?

Physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists, who have successfully completed the Basic Bobath (8-week) Foundation Course on the Bobath approach to the treatment/management of cerebral palsy and are currently working with babies and young children.
 

Course Aims and Objectives

Course participants will be provided with:

.  Understanding of the Bobath principles of treatment related to babies and
    young children
.  Information on normal and atypical development for pre-term (from 28 weeks
   gestation onwards) and term babies in the first year of life
.  Information on assessment tools / methods to include:
    ◊  Neurological (Prechtl), behavioural (Brazelton and NIDCAP)
        and developmental (Bayley and others)
    ◊  Traditional neurological examination of the new born
.  Criteria for therapeutic intervention
.  Current views on early treatment and management
.  Handling, facilitation and positioning for sleep, feeding, changing nappies
.  Observation of normal baby development
.  Demonstration of treatment
.  Video case studies
.  Practical sessions with workshops
.  Information on patterns of early brain damage


How will the course be taught?

Clinical workshops and video case studies will form an integral part of the course.
