THE BOBATH APPROACH TO THE TREATMENT OF CHILDREN WITH CEREBRAL PALSY
The various types of cerebral palsy are concisely categorised to provide a clear understanding of the different presentations of these children. Abilities and disabilities are presented in the form of a comparison between normal development and the arrested development of a child with cerebral palsy. Emphasis is placed on careful observation, problem solving skills and therapeutic aims. Treatment planning follows along the lines of working on specific pre-requisite skills necessary to facilitate more normal function. Long-term handling and management on an interdisciplinary basis are dealt with and great stress is placed upon the training of parents. Treatment is individually tailored to suit each child's needs. The video is aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate therapists, doctors, teachers, care workers and parents and is narrated by Jennifer Bryce FCSP. (1988) 60 mins. |

TEAMING WITH SUCCESS
The Bobath approach to the treatment of children with cerebral palsy was developed by Dr & Mrs Bobath in London over 50 years ago. Its practical application has been taught on postgraduate courses to thousands of therapists world-wide.
This video shows children and their parents working together with therapists of different disciplines, using the Bobath approach to enhance quality of daily life. It demonstrates how a team sharing core skills can identify common objectives based on the needs of the individual child.
Presented on this video are:
Francisca, aged eight years ten months who has athetosis with dystonic spasms. Emma, aged three and a half, premature with spastic diplegia. Claire aged four and a half, with choreoathetosis.
It focuses on communication, home management and activities of daily life.
The treatment techniques shown have been specifically chosen for these children. They are not necessarily applicable to all children with cerebral palsy.
The principles of management however, may be applied to all children with cerebral palsy.
It is relevant for general practitioners, community paediatricians, medical students, undergraduate and graduate physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, and parent groups.
