The Bobath Centre

for adults with neurological disability

Physiotherapy services available for adults

The Bobath Centre specialises in treatment for clients with:

  • Acquired neurological conditions caused, for example, by strokes or head injury, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury (incomplete), Parkinson's Disease
  • Neuro-development conditions, such as cerebral palsy

The Bobath approach to the treatment of adults with neurological disabilities was pioneered by Mrs Berta Bobath MBE, FCSP, PhD (Hons) in the 1950s. It has achieved international recognition as one of the foremost approaches to the treatment and management of people with neurological conditions. The concept continues to be developed by Bobath therapists working in this specialist field.

The aim of the Bobath treatment is to improve or restore function following neurological impairment. Treatment is tailored to clients' individual needs and is based upon an assessment of their abilities and analysis of their movement disorder.

Therapy sessions at the Bobath Centre focus on giving the client the opportunity to experience more efficient and effective movement and on finding ways to enable the client to incorporate these different movement strategies into their daily activities.

The therapy team at the Bobath Centre includes therapists with experience of treating adults with a variety of acquired neurological conditions and cerebral palsy, as a lifelong condition. This skill mix provides the best possible knowledge base for managing the whole spectrum of neurological conditions treated at the Bobath Centre.

Therapists

  • Clients are treated by a senior therapist who is a specialist in neurology.

  • The physiotherapist will have taken a recognised three-week adult Bobath course in neurology. This is a minimum standard and the therapist will be expected to take the advanced adult Bobath course.

  • There is continuous professional development, which is carried out within the team of physiotherapists. This consists of at least one Bobath tutor for adults with hemiplegia and other neurological conditions, and Bobath tutors who are specialists in the treatment of cerebral palsy.

Treatment Service

  • There is a guaranteed individual treatment time of at least 45 minutes per treatment session.

  • An assessment of the client's condition and a summary of advice and intervention will be sent to the referrer and to the client within four weeks of completion of the course of treatment.

  • Where appropriate the client will be shown an individually tailored home programme that will encompass functional activities and exercises to carry out at home. A written version of the home programme (with photos) will be sent to the client within four weeks of completion of treatment.

  • The client's condition will be re-assessed during any subsequent treatment period and their programme will be altered to reflect any changes.

  • Relevant treatment outcome indicators are used where appropriate.

Clients

  • The Bobath Centre is both a treatment and a teaching Centre and clients may be asked to participate in teaching sessions either through involvement in demonstration or observation of treatment. Clients' prior consent will always be sought before the admittance of any students or professional visitors to the treatment sessions.

Environment

The Bobath Centre is a non-residential purpose-built rehabilitation facility staffed by State Registered Chartered therapists who are specialists in neurophysiotherapy.

The Bobath approach to the management of neurological conditions focuses on therapy which promotes better control, variety and efficiency of movement as a basis for the retraining of skills needed in daily life.

The therapists at the Bobath Centre work with clients to help them incorporate into their daily activities the improvements achieved by therapy. Clients are also helped to understand their condition and, together with their relatives, to be active participants in the problem-solving process.

Bobath therapy is appropriate for adults with acquired neurodisability, regardless of age and duration of disability. Each person's problems are individually assessed by a physiotherapist who develops a treatment plan with an emphasis on setting goals for the individual. Continual reassessment ensures that personal treatment needs are met.

The Bobath Centre has a pleasant relaxed atmosphere with ample parking space and facilities for disabled people.

Therapists' Consultations

A therapist-to-therapist consultation service is available to discuss and advise on treatment for individuals already receiving therapy. To arrange this for a new client, we require a referral letter from the client's therapist and a doctor's referral with relevant medical history.

How to get an appointment

Referral Procedure

New clients can be referred to the Bobath Centre either by their consultant or general practitioner. The referral should be addressed to the Director of Therapy Services and should contain relevant details of the client's medical history. If the client is currently receiving therapy the Bobath Centre should be given the therapist's contact details so that there can be liaison with other professionals involved.

Appointments

Most clients will be offered an initial consultation to establish whether treatment at the Bobath Centre is appropriate and to determine a treatment programme. Occasionally, the consultation will be waived and an initial course will be offered of two weeks of daily treatment (Monday to Friday).

Funding for Treatment

Funding may be obtainable from the NHS or alternatively the client can fund the treatment privately. Appointments can be confirmed ONLY after the Bobath Centre has received notification that the NHS funding is available or has received the client's written agreement to finance the course of treatment themselves.

NHS Funding

Upon receipt of a referral from either a consultant or GP, an application for funding may be made to the NHS. When the Bobath Centre has been notified in writing that its fees will be met, a consultation or course of treatment will be offered to the client.
