Working with children with cerebral palsy in
under resourced areas - the Bobath perspective
This is a 5 day on-site course which demonstrates through lectures, workshops, discussion and treatment demonstrations how the Bobath approach can
support good intervention for children with cerebral palsy
in even the most severely under-resourced areas.
Who is the course for?
The course is suitable for physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists who have either worked in under-resourced areas or who are planning to do so. The course is open to both Bobath and non-Bobath trained therapists.
Aim:
To prepare therapists to work with children with cerebral palsy in
disadvantaged and under resourced areas / developing countries using
a problem solving approach to treatment and management based
on the Bobath concept.
Objectives:
1. To demonstrate practically how the Bobath
approach can be used to analyse functional
problems experienced by children with cerebral palsy and to
develop treatment and
management strategies that lead to better function.
2. To
present a framework for assessment and management of
children with cerebral palsy
living in disadvantaged and under-resourced areas.
3. To give participants opportunities to reflect on
how their knowledge and skills can be
applied to the management of children in their
caseload.
4. To explore strategies which can be used when working with large numbers of children.
5. To give participants insight into working with families of children with cerebral palsy
within a cross cultural setting.
6. To explore ways in which therapists transfer knowledge and skills to other health
workers, volunteers, caregivers and families.
7. To raise participants awareness of culturally sensitive practice and how it can be
achieved.
