MS is a disease of the central nervous system, and affects each individual in many different ways. In MS the protective layer which shields nerve cells, called the myelin sheath, is damaged by the person’s own immune system. This causes interruption or distortion of the messages that the nerves are sending and can occur in many different locations throughout the brain or the spinal cord. There is potential for a wide variety of nerves to be affected, causing a wide variety of signs and symptoms. It is a lifelong condition that can sometimes cause disability although it can sometimes be very mild.
At the Bobath Centre we have extensive experience working with people with all types of MS. We can help you identify problems that are worthwhile to work on in physiotherapy. These could include a variety of symptoms such as weakness or reduced sensation, increased tone (muscle stiffness), or more general things such as reduced fitness.
Bobath therapists use skilled therapeutic handling to help you move in the most efficient, effective and comfortable way. We work in partnership with you, to take a problem-solving approach, being analytical and reflective throughout.
This includes setting individualised functional goals and carefully considered home physical management programmes with the aim of lessening the impact of living with this condition.
Advice on adjuncts to physiotherapy, such as orthotics and FES are provided, with onward referrals made where indicated.
Bobath neurophysiotherapists are inclusive and have the broad skill set required to work with all people who have MS; we can work with you whether your presentation is mild or severe.
Treatment can be delivered in a range of different formats and is decided on an individual basis, from six- monthly reviews to intensive bursts of treatment for a couple of weeks or more.
