Who is the course for?
This workshop will be of interest to paediatric physiotherapists and paediatric neurologists who have clinical experience with using the Gross Motor Function Measure with ambulatory children with CP (those in GMFCS Levels I, II and III) and want to learn additional ways of assessing the gross motor movement of these children. Paediatric occupational therapists who actively use the GMFM in their clinical practice or research may also be interested in taking part.
Note: Previous experience using the GMFM is required for this course.

What is the Quality FM?
Gross motor interventions for children/youth who have cerebral palsy (CP) are focused on optimizing the child’s functional skills (‘what they can do’) and their movement quality ‘(how they do it’). Both are important components of motor skill performance that allow a child to participate in gross motor activities. The Quality FM (Wright et al., DMCN 2014) is an observational clinical assessment that captures the quality of movement of the Stand and Walk/Run/Jump skills (items) in the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM-66). It was designed by clinical researchers at Holland Bloorview and CanChild for use by paediatric physical therapists with children who have cerebral palsy (CP) and are age 5 years and up, able to walk (i.e., in GMFCS Level I, II or III), and can actively follow the GMFM’s administration instructions.
Quality FM workshop objectives
- Acquire background on the measurement of quality of movement in CP
- Develop an awareness of the structure and potential uses of the Quality FM
- Become familiar with the five quality attributes of the Quality FM
- Gain an understanding of the Quality FM’s generic and detailed scoring system
- View the performance style of GMFM skills by typically developing children (videos) and apply Quality FM scoring
- View the performance style of GMFM skills by children with CP in GMFCS Levels I, II and III (videos) and apply Quality FM scoring (videos)
- Learn the process of doing a Quality FM style GMFM assessment through live demonstration with a child with CP in GMFCS II (workshop day 1), and participate in scoring of the video (workshop day 2)
- Acquire tips for implementing the Quality FM in clinical and research practice
- Review the next steps of self-training using the Quality FM video materials posted for exclusive use of course participants on the Holland Bloorview Outcomes website in preparation of Quality FM Criterion test (also posted on the website)
How will the course be taught:
The workshop is a combination of lecture style sessions with group discussion during viewing and scoring of sample training videos. A hands-on component with a child with CP (GMFCS II) will provide opportunity for participants to observe live administration of a subset of items from the GMFM to show how to set it up for Quality FM scoring. After the course, self-study of on-line training videos (available only to course participants) will be done prior to completion of the in-line Criterion Test (certification)
NOTE: Certificates of attendance will be provided by Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. This Certificate implies neither the certification nor competence as an assessor on either test. On successful completion of the Quality FM criterion test after self-study of the web-based materials, a Criterion Test Certificate will be issued.
Tutor: Virginia Wright, PT, PhD
Dr Wright is a physiotherapist and Clinician Scientist at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, Toronto, Canada, and leads the SPARK (Supporting Physical Activity-based rehabilitation Research for Kids) Lab in the Bloorview Research Institute. Virginia holds the Bloorview Children’s Hospital Foundation Chair in Paediatric Rehabilitation (2012- 2017). She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Toronto and an Associate Member of CanChild, McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada. She has an MSc and PhD in Health Research Methodology from McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada.
Virginia’s research is grounded in her experience as a physiotherapist and outcome measures co-ordinator, and guided by her close links with several pediatric rehabilitation teams at Holland Bloorview. She currently holds 3 research grants as co-principal investigator (1.5 million dollars in research funding), and is co-investigator on 5 other grants ($800,000 in total). Her clinical research centres on development and validation of outcome measures for use in pediatric rehabilitation (cerebral palsy, prosthetics, and acquired brain injury in particular), and on evaluation of a variety of interventions in cerebral palsy. Her current program of gross motor outcomes research includes: validation of a new quality of movement measure (the Quality FM) that she created for children with cerebral palsy (CP) (as a companion to the Gross Motor Function Measure [GMFM]); refinement and validation of an advanced motor skills assessment (the Challenge Module) that she designed for children with CP; and a randomized trial that is evaluating treadmill-based robotic gait training in children with CP
