Course Leader:

Yolanda Broek (SLT Tutor) The Bobath Centre

What is it?

This is a two day course for speech and language therapists on the Bobath approach to assessment and treatment of children (and babies) with cerebral palsy.

Who is it for?

This course is designed specifically for speech and language therapists, however, the course will be of greater benefit to speech and language therapists who are currently working with children with cerebral palsy.

The course is designed to give participants an insight into the application of the Bobath concept to the work of the speech and language therapist.

  • To familiarise therapists with the basic concepts underpinning the Bobath approach to treatment.
  • To demonstrate the interdisciplinary nature of assessment and treatment using the Bobath approach.
  • To demonstrate and familiarise therapists with the application of the Bobath concept to the work of the speech and language therapist, particularly in the fields of dysphagia management and communication.

Pre-course work

Course participants will be required to bring along to the course a DVD clip of a child they are working with for the problem solving session on the last day. This can be a clip relating to any area they are working on with that child, including feeding, AAC, speech, etc.  It would be helpful to include some status as well as the child's function in the domain the therapist would like to discuss.  The DVD clip should be accompanied by a short birth history of the child and should not be more than 5 minutes long.

How will the course be taught?

The course will be made up of clinical demonstrations, practical sessions, discussions and lectures. This course has some practical sessions, please ensure that you are wearing comfortable, non-restrictive clothing each day.

Moving and Handling Statement

It is essential to have an awareness of the current safety issues relating to ‘moving and handling’ and where possible a working knowledge of the current legislation. During practical sessions, it is expected that course participants will be involved in moving and handling for the purposes of the course. This course aims to give participants practical skills which can not be learnt by observation alone. However, it is also important to be aware of health and safety issues and the need for personal risk assessment.
